ABOUT US

The Soweto Arts and Culture Festival (SACF) is a community development project founded by Thabo Konopi (a progressive entrepreneur and arts practitioner) and is curated by the National Arts and Culture Development Foundation (www.nacdf.org.za). SACF is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO Registration: 270-243 NPO) aimed at creating employment and assisting artists across various disciplines to showcase and market their works. The festival promotes social cohesion through economic empowerment and skills development initiatives for artists from previously disadvantaged communities. This event also serves as an opportunity to preserve and celebrate our rich and diverse South African arts, culture and heritage.

The 2021 inaugural edition of the festival created a lot of job opportunities for artists who have had no income due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The four day festival was held in Meadowlands, Soweto from the 20th to the 23rd of May 2021. The event was headlined by established artists as well as up and coming local artists across various disciplines. The event enjoyed extensive media coverage from SABC Morning Live, Newzroom Afrika, Radio 2000, Power FM, etc. We also had various impactful social media campaigns with our hashtag #SACF2021. The festival also conducted free educational workshops for young and aspirant artists which were presented by various entertainment industry experts. The 2021 edition was a huge success and consequently received an award for championing the township economy from SSICCF (Soweto and Surrounding Industry Chambers Council Forum).

The event also presents a credible marketing platform for brands. The proposed brand partnership is designed to offer an integrated marketing strategy opportunity that will allow a brands to fully maximize the Soweto Arts and Culture Festival asset and therefore contribute towards achieving their marketing, communication and business objectives.

The festival’s secondary aim is to provide developmental impetus to the art form to boost local economies by offering small scale businesses an opportunity to supply the event with products and services where festivals are staged – such as catering, hawkers/vendors, security, technical equipment, etc. We always endeavour to use suppliers with a solid history of quality workmanship and businesses that encourage black economic empowerment and the development of staff from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
